LAREDO, TX – The City of Laredo and District 6 Councilmember Marte Martinez presented the extension of the newly resurfaced Plantation East Drive with the intention of reducing traffic congestion north of that location.
The Plantation East Drive Extension consists of an eight-inch concrete roadway section and sidewalks connecting to Shiloh Drive. The City Council reported that the extension will reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility and pedestrian accessibility in north Laredo for residents in subdivisions including Deer Ridge, Prestwick Reserve at Deer Ridge, Winfield and other surrounding neighborhoods connecting from Del Mar Boulevard to Shiloh Drive.
Channel improvements were also made to reduce flooding in adjacent neighborhoods. The street, water distribution, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, street lighting and other interventions cost a total of approximately $553,000, while the canal work cost about $750,000.
The project agreement was finalized in July 2019 between the City of Laredo and Roberto Rodriguez, developer and owner of the property, who donated land to the City Council, which was then approved by the City Council.
In 2021, the Laredo City Council approved executing an agreement with Roberto Rodriguez for additional paving work to expand Plantation East. This project was completed with the help of engineering firms Gilpin Engineering Co. and Sherfey Engineering Co.
“Laredo and District 6 have achieved another goal that will improve the quality of life for our community. The city is committed to continuing to invest in projects that decrease travel time and ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists,” said Marte Martinez.
