NADBank grants US$3.4 million to rehabilitate Mexicali sewer outfalls
MEXICALI, BC – The North American Development Bank (NADBank) granted US$3.4 million in non-reimbursable resources to the Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Mexicali (CESPM) to support a project to rehabilitate five pressure outfalls of the sewerage system in the municipality of Mexicali, Baja California.
The financing is provided through the Border Environment Infrastructure Fund (BEIF), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and administered by NADBank.
The project, which has a total cost of US$6.8 million, consists of the replacement of more than 180 valves for pressure emitters #1, #3, #4, #4, #6 and #7, the installation of 34 concrete valve boxes and a telemetry system.
The implementation of this project is intended to reduce the risk of pipe failures that could cause sewage to overflow onto local streets and into the New River, which flows north to the United States.
In particular, the project will help protect public health and the environment by preventing the discharge of approximately 1,961 liters per second of wastewater. As a result, sanitary sewer services will be improved for more than 235,000 existing household connections.
This project is part of the Strategic Sanitation Plan developed by CESPM to eliminate and reduce untreated wastewater discharges to the Nuevo River, prioritize system rehabilitation activities, and establish a financial strategy.
To date, NADBank has collaborated with CESPM in the financing of eight sewerage and sanitation projects for the benefit of the Municipality.
