SAN DIEGO, CA – A new affordable housing complex in the East Village has officially opened in downtown San Diego, the City Council announced.
Father Joe’s Villages St. Teresa of Calcutta, a 14-story tower located at the intersection of 14th and Commercial streets, aims to provide affordable housing for families, seniors and people with disabilities.
The County of San Diego reported that the project cost $145 million, and the building has 407 housing units, eighty of which are for veterans. Some of the housing units belong to a low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program that offers rents of up to $1,269 per month for studio homes, or 60% of the tenant’s income.
The property includes studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, common rooms, a gymnasium, children’s play areas, dog runs and community gardens. In addition, the property is intended to provide housing for more than 500 people in need of a permanent place to live and will free up space in area shelters.
To become residents of the building, individuals and families must meet very specific income requirements that can be inquired about via email, stteresaofcalcutta@hyderco.com.
Construction of the building was funded through a combination of public and private funds, including a County investment of $14 million in No Place Like Home Program funds, along with a 20-year commitment to provide mental health services. It is the County’s largest investment in a single affordable housing project to date.
