NEW MEXICO – Following a shooting at a New Mexico school that left a student dead and another in custody, New Mexico officials are pushing for a law to hold accountable those who carelessly have guns in their homes.
Currently, the state of New Mexico lacks a law that makes gun owners responsible when minors, mainly their children, seize them and open fire on other people.
The legislators of that entity seek to pass a law so that owners of weapons protect them in a responsible way and do not keep them at the hand of anyone inside the house.
The city councilor, Pat Davis, expressed that it is very frustrating that every two years they seek to pass through different means that legislation is carried out so that Albuquerque is responsible for the possession of weapons, however, no result is achieved favorable.
What is needed is to bring criminal charges against those who do not store their weapons safely to prevent a recurrence of tragedies like the one that recently occurred at Washington Middle School, where there was a shooting at the hands of a 13-year-old teenager.
He explained that last fall he tried to get the legislation approved but his proposal received six votes against and three in favor; in January the proposal was presented again but was rejected again.
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller noted that even though the state constitution does not allow cities to regulate guns, he is in favor of keeping guns away from violent criminals and vulnerable children.
He indicated that those who own weapons have the responsibility to keep them in a safe space, either inside a safe or with a lock for weapons, to avoid tragedies.
