EL PASO, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection has announced the opening of a new migrant processing facility in El Paso, Texas.
The primary purpose of the center will be to securely and expeditiously process individuals in Border Patrol custody.
CBP is constantly assessing operational needs to determine if additional temporary facilities will be needed. The new center is located on U.S. Highway 54 and will have a 1,000-person capacity.
The facility is weatherproof, climate-controlled and is expected to provide ample areas for eating, sleeping and personal hygiene. The design of the new facility is similar to recently constructed temporary facilities. The building is 153,000 square feet and occupies a 28-acre site.
The temporary center will provide additional processing capacity for the Border Patrol’s El Paso Sector. Currently, the Border Patrol’s Central Processing Center, which opened at Hondo Pass in El Paso in the fall of 2020, has a capacity of 1,40.
Since April 2020, CBP has seen a steady increase in border encounters in the Western Hemisphere. The new temporary facility location was chosen because it is central to El Paso Sector Border Patrol stations throughout West Texas and New Mexico.
