NUEVO LEON – Although the impact of the electricity reform in Nuevo León has not been estimated, the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) indicated that the entity has important opportunities in energy infrastructure.
“We are still analyzing the impact of the electricity reform at the local level. What we have clear so far is that it is necessary to invest in energy infrastructure, and Nuevo León has important opportunities in this area,” said José Francisco Guajardo, president of the CMIC in Nuevo León.
Regarding the performance of the sector last year, Guajardo said that although 2020 was a very complicated year for the entire economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this sector registered a similar performance compared to 2019, which was an important achievement for the industry.
The report of the construction companies published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicated that, during last December, the value of production in Nuevo León, in real terms, amounted to US$136 million, a rise of 1.2% compared to the previous month, but a fall of 11.94% compared to the same period of 2019.
“The value of production in December maintained a trend similar to the historical one. This would be ‘normal’ behavior, if we were not facing a pandemic,” Guajardo explained.
He stressed that the industry recognizes the effort made by investors, builders and the three levels of government that have maintained, as much as they could, the level of operation of a sector that is important to the economy.
Despite the fact that in its monthly comparison the sector registered an increase in the last two months of 2020, in the annual report, compared to the same month a year ago, it accumulated three months of casualties, registering falls in six of the 12 months of last year.
For all of 2020, the value of production amounted to US$1.586 billion, a marginal increase of 0.12% compared to the US$1.584 million registered in 2019.
Although the private sector was the one that most contributed to the performance of construction, its participation in the total of last year was 84.57%, which represented a decrease of 2.35% compared to 2019.
“The private sector presented ups and downs during 2020; however, it highlights the commitment and confidence of investors in the construction sector of Nuevo León, where the construction of industrial parks, shopping malls and multipurpose buildings stands out,” said Guajardo.
The value of private sector production in 2020 amounted to US$1.340 million, a decrease of 2.59% compared to 2019, while that of the public sector rose 18.13%, to reach US$244 million.
