U.S. – The Old Navy store located in the Sunland Park Mall closed its doors to the public, joining the list of retailers that have withdrawn from the plaza.
Since shortly before 2020, stores like Sears, Macy’s, JC Penney, Forever 21, Chik-Fil-A, Cinemark Bistro, among others, have suspended their operations in the mall, as a reflection of the crisis that the border region has been going through.
According to employees of the plaza, the Old Navy store has been closed for more than a week and it is not known if there are any plans to relocate it to another sector of the city. However, they pointed out that the store’s departure opens up opportunities for the arrival of new brands.
During 2021, the mall opened 28 new stores, so they expect to have new additions throughout this year.
At the moment, Gap Inc., owner of the brand, has not issued any information regarding the sudden closure, or if it is contemplating the withdrawal of more branches in El Paso, Texas, since so far, the chain has three more stores open to the public.
According to the Gap corporation’s financial report, as of the end of January 2022, the Old Navy brand had 1,220 stores in the United States, and the company has struggled to remain active in the face of the increase in online commerce and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the end of 2020, the corporation announced that it would close 350 Gap and Banana Republic stores over the next three years.
