Pacific Fusion has signed a memorandum of understanding with the state of New Mexico to consider establishing a research and development center in the city of Albuquerque, according to the state’s Department of Economic Development.
The final decision on the location will be made in September 2025, once environmental and urban planning assessments have been completed and incentives have been defined by the state. If finalized, the initiative would involve an estimated capital investment of $1 billion and the creation of more than 200 permanent jobs, in addition to hundreds of temporary positions during the construction phase.
The project envisages the creation of a facility called the Demonstration System, focused on achieving a technical milestone known as “net fusion energy gain,” in which the energy generated by the reaction exceeds the energy stored in the system. The company seeks to demonstrate this technology as part of its goal to develop clean energy sources.
Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 and bases its technology on innovations developed by Sandia National Laboratories. According to the company, the proximity to these research centers and New Mexico’s scientific and technological ecosystem are factors that make the region attractive for its expansion.
Local and state authorities, as well as representatives from the economic sector, highlighted the potential arrival of the project as part of a broader strategy to position the state as a leader in advanced energy technologies.
The company has raised more than $900 million in private capital from funds such as General Catalyst and Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
Although it would not be an electricity-generating plant, the research center would operate under strict safety standards and without significant impact on the community, according to local government and company representatives.
