PHOENIX, AZ – The City of Phoenix selected Machinex for a new partnership to deliver a 30 ton per hour (TPH) residential recycling system by 2023.
The City Council released that the project is part of the City of Phoenix’s circular economy and waste diversion initiatives, which includes separating the majority of recyclable materials from its landfill, with the goal of achieving Zero Waste by 2050.
To become a circular, zero-waste, carbon-neutral urban area, the City of Phoenix has focused on five key pillars to reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and reimagine. As a comprehensive solution for a sustainable tomorrow, the project also has a positive economic impact on the community by creating new employment opportunities.
According to the City Council, Machinex will contribute to the city’s goal of achieving zero waste by 2050 and transitioning to a circular economy by providing a new single-stream system to achieve higher recovery rates of recyclable materials.
Since the City’s project requirements include very demanding standards in terms of throughput and sorting quality, Machinex accepted the challenge and designed a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) to fit into the Zero Waste policy, to save resources and preserve the environment.
The 30TPH MRF is designed to sort recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, HDPE, PET, PP, mixed plastics and glass from the residential collection program, with a processing capacity of more than 10,000 tons per month.
As disclosed, this recycling system, designed and equipped entirely by Machinex, allows the smaller fractions to be handled separately, while reducing the depth of material loading in pre-sorting, making the sorting position safer and more efficient.
“Having worked with the city for several years in various capacities, I am very familiar with Phoenix’s history of innovating around the recycling program,” said Will Herzog, Western Region Sales Manager for Machinex.
