ARIZONA – PowerPhotonic, a leader in the design and manufacture of scaled optical components for lasers and advanced systems, announced the extension of its long-term lease of its plant at the Sahuarita Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center (SAMTEC) in Arizona, 50 miles from the Nogales, Sonora border.
PowerPhotonic’s products are precision optical parts. Accordingly, the company has developed its own unique production machines that manufacture products from glass wafers. This equipment is quite similar in concept to some electronic semiconductor wafer systems, and they also need to operate in a “clean room” environment to eliminate dust.
The Arizona Commerce Authority indicated that following the announcement, the company will be better able to serve its customers, particularly those in the defense sector, who require U.S. design and manufacturing of key high-tech components and modules.
By choosing Sahuarita as the location for its U.S. engineering and manufacturing headquarters, PowerPhotonic would leverage local skills, support and enthusiasm that will enable it to quickly establish a center of excellence for the design and manufacture of high-tech optics and optical systems.
In addition, the company will add 20 high-tech jobs in Sahuarita with an economic impact of $32 million over 5 years, with the hiring of optical design engineers, process engineers, machine operation technicians, product planners, inventory control, purchasing and shipping.
SAMTEC is a 32,000 sq. ft. multi-tenant advanced manufacturing center, which is the first facility of its kind in Sahuarita. SAMTEC’s goal is to establish the region as a research center for business innovation, technology and advanced manufacturing.
