SAN DIEGO, CA – More than 21,630 electric vehicles were sold in the city of San Diego during 2021, according to data from the California Energy Commission, who highlighted that said state continues to lead the market for this type of cars in the United States.
According to statistics from the Energy Commission, during last year, 16,335 electric cars were sold in San Diego; 5,128 hybrids and 167 using another alternative such as hydrogen; making the city one of the regions with the highest sales of these units, below Los Angeles and Santa Clara.
The best-selling car was the Tesla Model 3 (5940), followed by the Tesla Model Y (5280). Other cars in demand were the Tesla Model S (570); Toyota Prius Prime (905); Toyota RAV4 Prime (830); Chevrolet Bolt EV (958); BMW 3 Series (207); Hyundai Kona EV (361); Volvo XC90 (403); Ford Mustang Mach-E (601); Volkswagen ID.4 (560); KIA Niro EV (337); Nissan Leaf (472); Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (411); Porsche Taycan (227); Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (239), to name a few.
According to information from the Government of California, the burgeoning zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) market continues to be led by that state in the United States.
Governor Gavin Newsom put the state’s value at over 1 million plug-in electric cars, trucks, SUVs and motorcycles sold in California, more than the total sales of the next 10 states combined.
New Energy Commission data also show that California, with only 10% of the nation’s cars, now accounts for more than 40% of all zero-emission cars in the country.
Newsom has advanced investments and policies to advance the state’s ZEV goals, including proposing $6.1 billion in additional California Blueprint funding to create a total ZEV package of $10 billion.
Over the past 10 years, annual sales of plug-in electric vehicles in California have grown from just 7,000 in 2011 to more than a quarter of a million sold by 2021, accounting for more than 12% of all light vehicle sales last year.
California also leads the nation in all other zero-emission vehicle metrics, including the highest level of public funding, the highest percentage of EV market share, and the most extensive public charging infrastructure.
