Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango Lead Energy Transition Mineral Projects in Mexico

The northern states of Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango are leading Mexico’s development of mineral projects linked to the energy transition, focusing on materials considered essential for clean technologies and advanced manufacturing.

Recent data shows that Sonora ranks first in the number of strategic mineral initiatives, with more than 200 projects related to resources such as copper, lithium, graphite, rare earth elements, silver, and zinc. Chihuahua follows with over 150 projects, mainly centered on silver, iron, and copper, while Durango reports more than 110 initiatives focused on silver, lead, zinc, and copper.

Together with other mining states, these regions account for more than 60% of the country’s projects associated with critical minerals. These materials are key components in the production of electric vehicle batteries, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, and other high-tech applications.

The concentration of mining activity in northern Mexico highlights the country’s growing role in global supply chains for clean energy and digital technologies. As demand for sustainable solutions increases worldwide, these states are strengthening their position as strategic suppliers.

At the same time, the expansion of mineral projects has raised discussions around environmental protection, regulatory frameworks, and community engagement. Industry leaders and policymakers emphasize the need to balance economic development with responsible resource management.

Overall, the strong presence of energy transition minerals in Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango reinforces Mexico’s potential to support regional industrial growth and contribute to global sustainability goals in the coming years.
