HERMOSILLO – The reduction in new car sales currently recorded by the automotive industry could cause a slight deceleration in the 6% economic recovery projected for 2021 in Sonora.
“The automotive industry has an important relevance in the entity because it represents 10% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and by decreasing the productive and sales activity, the commercial activity could close between 5.6% and 5.7%,” explained economist Marco Antonio Cordova Galvez.
He mentioned that in 2020 during the most critical period of the pandemic, the economy in the State fell by 11% and according to the reactivation of activities, it was planned to close the current year with an economic recovery of 6%.
“The process continues, but instead of recovering 6% it will probably reach 5.6% or 5.7% by the end of the year; there is a slight deceleration due to the degree of importance of automotive activity in the entity,” he stressed.
Another important factor to take into account, he said, is the decrease in the supply and demand of new vehicles, because if this continues at the same level it could generate an increase in sales prices.
Cordova Galvez indicated that worldwide the value chain has been interrupted due to the lack of semiconductor chips, which has had a negative effect on the automotive industry both nationally and locally.
