The Government of Sonora is advancing a comprehensive modernization strategy for its key airports, highways, and ports, aiming to transform the state into a premier logistics hub and significantly boost economic development in the region.
The ambitious infrastructure plan includes major upgrades to the Guaymas and Ciudad Obregón airports, representing a combined investment of nearly US$53 million.
The Guaymas–General José María Yáñez International Airport is slated for a full-scale modernization, including the expansion and rehabilitation of its runway, apron, and taxiways. The project also includes the construction of a new control tower and terminal improvements. Simultaneously, work at the Ciudad Obregón airport will focus on the runway, parking lot, a new hangar, and an expansion of the passenger waiting area.
According to official reports, the initial phase—runway expansion and parking lot rehabilitation in Guaymas—broke ground last July with a budget of US$28 million. Subsequent phases scheduled for 2025 include the rehabilitation of an existing hangar and the construction of the new control tower.
The modernization drive extends to the Port of Guaymas, with projects designed to increase its operational capacity and solidify its role as a critical logistics center for northwestern Mexico.
In a significant parallel investment, the state is modernizing the Guaymas-Chihuahua Highway with a budget of US81.1 million. The project, which encompasses three 20-kilometer stretches, is designed to enhance freight transit and strengthen commercial ties with northern Mexico and the United States.
These initiatives are core components of the broader Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan, a state strategy that integrates infrastructure development with goals to attract foreign investment and enhance regional competitiveness.
By synergizing these airport, highway, and port projects, the Sonora government anticipates a substantial increase in its logistics and transportation capacity, with positive ripple effects expected for commerce, tourism, and job creation across the state.
