BROWNSVILLE, TX – Texas A&M University broke ground on the construction of the South Texas Workforce Development Project’s advanced manufacturing training center near the Port of Brownsville.
Gov. Greg Abbott praised the state’s efforts to bring high-quality training programs to Texas workers. Organized by the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, the center will provide training for people in the Rio Grande Valley area for high-demand jobs, while stimulating advances in manufacturing through research and initiatives.
“This new, state-of-the-art facility here at the Port of Brownsville will prepare Texans to lead the workforce of the future,” the Governor said.
Abbott said that with the new center, students will be prepared for high-demand jobs and will receive hands-on instruction on real projects often found in the workforce.
“They will get the experience and training they need to excel in cutting-edge manufacturing jobs here in the Rio Grande Valley. Texas is America’s economic engine, where workers know they live in a state where they can get the skills they need to help build the future,” Abbott added.
Speaking to business and education leaders, the governor highlighted the Rio Grande Valley as the epicenter of economic growth and innovation in Texas, where the next generation of manufacturing leaders will be trained.
In addition, Governor Abbott praised the state’s strong manufacturing industry, citing that Texas is the leading exporter for 12 consecutive years and the eighth largest economy in the world.
Also at the groundbreaking ceremony were Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, Board of Regents member Mike Hernandez III and Vice Chairman Robert L. Albritton; Brownsville District Navigation Commissioner Esteban “Steve” Guerra; and former state representative Eddie Lucio III.
