The Chinese Semiconductor Industry and Effects on the Global Automotive Industry

GlobalAutoIndustry.com’s latest Audio Interview “The Chinese Semiconductor Industry and Effects on the Global Automotive Industry” with Ron Hesse features Dr. Doug Sparks. Doug is the CEO of M2N Technologies LLC, a consulting firm specializing in semiconductors, MEMS and sensors, including their supply chains. He has just published a new book, “A Decade in the Chinese Semiconductor Industry: An American’s Story”. Doug was the CTO of Hanking Electronics which built a high-volume wafer fab in Shenyang, China.  In addition to China, he has international semiconductor business experience in Japan and Europe as well as the US in medical, industrial, aerospace, consumer and automotive markets. He also founded NanoGetters, a microchip packaging company which was acquired by Materion. He worked at Delphi and General Motors early in his career, and is a graduate of Purdue University.

In the 11-minute Audio Interview, Dr. Sparks discusses these questions:

  • How are US export controls impacting China’ semiconductor industry and more specifically the automotive electronics industry?
  • What is China’s strategy to get around all the restrictions that the US and its allies are putting around technology export to China?
  • How is the explosion in EV exports from China related to the semiconductor industry and are there similarities in these markets and supply chains?
  • Is there an over capacity issue in semiconductors like there is with EVs?
  • Are there risks of using Chinese EVs with all the semiconductor sensors integrated into them for autonomous vehicle operation mode?
