Toyota has announced an investment of US$3.6 billion to build a new manufacturing plant in San Antonio, Texas, as part of a strategy to shift production of the Tacoma pickup from its plant in Baja California to the United States.
The new facility will cover 2.5 million square feet and is scheduled to begin operations no later than 2030, creating 2,000 jobs; once the plant is completed, production of the Tacoma, currently carried out in Baja California, will be transferred to Texas. Toyota clarified that, in parallel with this, production of the Tacoma will continue at its plant in Guanajuato, meaning the model will also continue to be manufactured in Mexico.
The automaker’s decision also comes amid greater uncertainty for the industry, following the US decision not to confirm the automatic renewal of the USMCA during the agreement’s first review. This decision keeps the treaty in effect until 2036 and opens a period of annual reviews—a context that has prompted companies to pay closer attention to their investment and production strategies in North America.
