ARIZONA – In a meeting held at the White House, President Donald Trump and TSMC CEO C.C. Wei announced an expansion of the company’s operations in Arizona.
With an additional investment of $100 billion, the company will build three new semiconductor fabs, two advanced packaging facilities and a research and development (R&D) center, creating thousands of new jobs in the state.
This new investment adds to the three fabs TSMC already has operational or under construction in Arizona, consolidating its presence in the sector with a total investment of $165 billion. The first plant in the state was announced in May 2020 and, since then, the company has expanded its operation with cutting-edge technologies and a growing workforce.
In January, TSMC began production of advanced 4-nanometer chips in Arizona. The second plant under construction will manufacture chips with 2nm and 3nm technology, while the third fab, scheduled for production by the end of the decade, will focus on 2nm or more advanced processes.
“TSMC’s historic announcement cements Arizona as the epicenter of advanced chip innovation and manufacturing in the United States,” said Governor Katie Hobbs. “With cutting-edge technologies, world-class universities and a robust talent ecosystem, Arizona is driving the future of artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.”
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego also celebrated the announcement. “This investment strengthens domestic chip manufacturing, reduces dependence on foreign supply chains and enhances national security. Billions in investment and high-paying jobs cement Phoenix as a global leader in semiconductor production.”
TSMC’s decision aligns with the federal government’s efforts to strengthen semiconductor production in the U.S. In January, the Department of Commerce and Natcast, operator of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), announced that Arizona will host the NSTC Prototyping and NAPMP Advanced Packaging Piloting Facility, a major research and development facility for the CHIPS for America program.
