U.S. reopens its borders

MEXICO – The United States reopened its land and air borders to foreign visitors vaccinated against COVID-19, ending 20 months of travel restrictions that separated families, hurt tourism and strained diplomatic ties around the world.

The ban, imposed by former President Donald Trump in March 2020 and maintained by his successor Joe Biden, has been widely criticized and became emblematic of the disruption caused by the pandemic.

Dozens of crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border reopened to nonessential travel after a 20-month closure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, though life has yet to return to normal along the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) stretch.

Ahead of the reopening, hundreds of cars formed miles-long lines in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, while queues at crosswalks grew steadily.
