SAN DIEGO, CA – Unemployment in the city of San Diego, California showed a slight variation during the month of May 2023 by registering a seasonally adjusted rate of 3.5%, as reported by the Employment Development Department (EDD).
The city showed an unemployment rate above the 3.3 rate reached in April of this year. During the fourth month of 2023, the border city reached a labor force of 1,599,200 people. Of the total labor force, 1,546,500 were employed, while 52,700 were looking for work.
According to EDD figures, during the month of May, San Diego had a labor force of 1,595,300 people, of which 1,539,600 were formally employed, while 55,600 were looking for a job.
California’s unemployment rate held steady as of April 2023 and remained at 4.5 percent for May 2023, as the state’s employers added 47,300 nonfarm jobs to the economy, according to EDD data.
Total nonfarm employment for April 2023 in California was revised upward by 2,900 jobs. Since the current economic expansion began in April 2020, the state has gained 3,170,200 jobs, a monthly average of 85,681 jobs gained during that time.
California’s nonfarm employment gain in May was 14% of the national increase of 339,000 jobs.
Eight of 11 California industry sectors added jobs in May, with Private Education and Health Services leading the way with more than 16,400 jobs, thanks to above-average gains in the General Medical and Surgical Hospitals, Nursing Care Facilities, and Individual and Family Services industry groups.
Professional and Business Services posted the second largest month-over-month increase with more than 11,700 jobs, thanks to contributions from Computer Systems Design and Related Services, Scientific Research and Development, Employment Services, and Building and Housing Services.
The manufacturing sector suffered the largest month-over-month decline in employment with more than 5,700 jobs lost, due in part to losses in computer and electronic components manufacturing, as well as metal fabrication, machinery manufacturing, and apparel manufacturing.
