SAN DIEGO, CA – Unemployment in the city of San Diego during October 2023 saw a slight increase, compared to the same period but in 2022, remaining even above what was reached in September of this year, according to data from the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
The city showed an unemployment rate of 4.2%, contrasting with the 3.2% reached in October 2022. During the tenth month of 2023, San Diego reached a labor force of 1,602,600 people. Of the total labor force, 1,535,800 were employed, while 66,800 were looking for work.
A year ago, San Diego had a labor force of 1,578,900, of which 1,529,100 had a job, while 49,800 were looking for a job.
Compared to the immediately preceding month, during September of this year, unemployment in the city of San Diego, California registered a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.0%, as reported by EDD.
California’s unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 4.8%, in October 2023, despite the fact that the state’s businesses added 40,200 nonfarm jobs to the economy, according to EDD data.
Since the current economic expansion began in April 2020, California has gained 3,236,900 jobs, which is an average of 77,069 jobs per month.
California’s 40,200 nonfarm job gain in October accounted for 26.8% of the national gain of 150,000 jobs for the month.
Ten of California’s 11 industry sectors increased employment in October, with private education and health services leading the way with more than 13,200 openings. Health care and social assistance saw an uptick with above-average increases in ambulatory care facilities, nursing care facilities, and individual and family services.
Trade, transportation and utilities also posted strong month-over-month increases with more than 6,900 jobs, thanks to increases in air transportation and courier services.
Financial activities was the only industry sector to record a month-over-month employment loss with 300 fewer positions, the decline was due to reductions in Credit Intermediation and Related Activities.
