SAN DIEGO, CA – Unemployment in San Diego showed an increase during the month of April compared to the same period but in 2023, registering an unseasonally adjusted rate of 4.1% according to the most recent report from the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
The city showed an increase of 0.8 percentage points from the 3.3% achieved in April 2023, when it reported a labor force of 1,599,200 people, of which 1,546,500 had a job and 52,700 citizens were looking for one.
According to the EDD, in April 2024, the border city reached a labor force of 1,588,000 people. Of the total labor force in the fourth month, 1,522,700 people were employed, while 65,200 were looking for work.
San Diego’s April unemployment figure increased by 12,500 more than the same month in 2023.
California employers added 5,200 nonfarm jobs in April 2024 and the unemployment rate remained unchanged for the third consecutive month at 5.3 percent, according to data released by EDD. April’s employment gain follows a revised job increase of 18,200 in March 2024.
The state’s labor market expansion entered its 48th month in April 2024. Since April 2020, California has gained 3,057,800 jobs, which is an average of 63,704 per month.
The state’s current job growth began in August 2023 and has accounted for a total gain of 200,300 jobs. The above reflects a rebound following a slowdown over the previous 10 months as the state’s economy settled down after its dramatic post-pandemic recovery.
Five of California’s 11 industry sectors added jobs in April, with private education and health services posting the largest month-over-month increase for the fourth consecutive month with more than 11,900 openings.
Trade, transportation and utilities also posted notable growth with more than 5,100 jobs, above average increases in the trucking and courier industry groups.
Construction experienced a decrease of 6 thousand jobs due to persistent stormy weather conditions that affected projects across the state. The EDD noted that the sector is still up 15,100 jobs over the year.
