UTEP Banking Academy Receives US$20,000 Donation from TFCU

EL PASO, TX – The University of Texas at El Paso’s (UTEP) Banking Academy, part of the College of Business Administration, has received $20,000 from the El Paso credit union (TFCU) to support the goal of preparing students for successful careers in the financial services industry.

The UTEP Banking Academy was established in 2021 to address the shortage of banking professionals in the West Texas and Southern New Mexico region and improve Hispanic participation in banking management roles.

Alejandro Yu, vice president of marketing for TFCU, said the faculty donation and participation in the Banking Academy reflects the credit union’s commitment to helping develop El Paso’s future leaders to be innovatively and effectively prepared for their professional careers.

“TFCU has had a long history of being a strong supporter of UTEP. For many years, we have been a sponsor and supporter of many initiatives at UTEP as we continue to live the credit union industry philosophy of ‘people helping people.’ We were excited about the creation of the Banking Academy because it is an innovative way to help students start their careers,” Yu said.

UTEP’s banking body is open to students who have declared a major in finance with a concentration in Banking and Financial Institutions.

Founding partners of the Banking Academy include WestStar, GECU, Bank of America, the Texas Bankers Association, Sunflower Bank, International Bank of Commerce and Commerce Bank, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
