JUAREZ, CHIH – The Universidad Tecnológica Paso del Norte (UTPN) has begun the process of integrating the Semiconductor Engineering program into its academic offerings.
The rector of the UTPN, Ulises Martinez Contreras, informed that applications for the opening of this career were made to the General Directorate of Technological and Polytechnic Universities (DGUTyP) and the State Commission for Higher Education Planning (COEPES).
The director explained that, once approval has been granted by the federal and state educational authorities, UT Paso del Norte will offer Semiconductor Engineering starting in the September-December 2025 term.
Martinez Contreras explained that these types of educational programs are in addition to the efforts between Mexico and the United States to create an industry in the region focused on the development of chips or microprocessors, as they have in Asian countries such as Taiwan.
“Programs are needed that can contribute in a positive way so that when there are companies, there is talent that can develop this technology,” he said.
Semiconductor Engineering is part of the New Educational Model (NME) of the Subsystem of Technological Universities, which came into operation in September 2024, however, it will be until this year that it will begin to be taught in ten institutions that belong to the DGUTyP, including UTPN.
As part of the preparations for the start of this Engineering program, university directors and teachers of the Mechatronics area held a meeting to learn about its curriculum, graduate profile and relevance.
