YUMA, AZ – As the city of Yuma continues to grow, the groundbreaking for the expansion of the Desert Dunes water treatment plant will take place, with the intention of increasing the amount of wastewater that can be treated.
The groundbreaking for the plant expansion is scheduled for Thursday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. The event will include brief remarks from the Desert Dunes Water Treatment Plant’s President and CEO.
The event will include brief remarks from city officials, city staff and the project contractor, PCL Construction Inc.
According to the Yuma City Council, the project is necessary because in recent years the city has experienced above-average increases in domestic and industrial wastewater flows within the area served by Desert Dunes.
The planned expansion would increase the amount of wastewater the plant can treat from 3.3 million gallons per day to 6.6 million gallons per day.
In anticipation of Yuma’s growth, the facility’s expansion capacity was part of its original design prior to its opening in 2005.
“We are very pleased to mark the milestone upgrade of the Desert Dunes Wastewater Treatment Plant. This is the result of the City’s foresight nearly 20 years ago to make this a planned facility, and the continued growth and investment in our community. Once completed, Desert Dunes will ensure future development continues uninterrupted, and will continue to support economic growth in Yuma,” said Utilities Director Jeremy McCall.
PCL Construction, which originally built the Desert Dunes water reclamation facility in 2005, was selected to build this expansion.
“A lot has changed in 20 years, and we are excited to bring new innovations and solutions to this project,” said John Rodriguez, PCL project manager.
