LAS CRUCES, NM – Las Cruces, New Mexico adopted a resolution to initiate a pilot program for the installation of hygiene stations throughout the city.
The City Council reported that although the resolution has been approved, further details such as the number of stations to be installed, where they will be placed, how they will be managed, maintained and financed could be presented shortly.
Once all the missing details are presented to the Cabildo, the Council members will be able to give their final approval to implement the program quickly.
The hygiene stations will include portable toilets and sinks, and may include biohazard bins for the disposal of used syringe needles and other sharps.
All waste will be stored in containers. The goal of the proposed hygiene stations is to reduce nuisances that adversely affect public health and safety by assisting the homeless.
The stations have the potential to reduce the number of fines and criminal charges stemming from people simply seeking a space to manage their personal hygiene; in addition, the stations seek to address public health safety concerns by combating the spread of the Covid-19 virus and other infectious risks and significantly decreasing the possibility of touch-borne diseases.
Local authorities indicated that the hygiene stations seek to ensure a clean and safe environment for the city.
