BROWNSVILLE, TX – Reaching your vacation destination with nonstop service to Los Angeles, California or Orlando, Florida, is now possible in Brownsville with the arrival of Avelo Airlines, which began operations in the Texas city on May 17.
Avelo Airlines’ inaugural flight to Orlando, based in Houston, took off Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from Brownsville-South Padre International Airport at near full capacity, local authorities reported.
Brownsville Mayor John Cowen Jr. said the city has been working very hard to get a new airline, so he welcomed the arrival of Avelo Airlines.
“We’ve been working hard to get a new airline here for a long time and we’re very pleased to have Avelo Airlines here. It opens the door to more connections from Brownsville and provides affordable opportunities for our families to travel to both coasts,” Cowen said.
East Coast travelers to Orlando can visit Kennedy Space Center, while Mickey Mouse fans can visit Disneyworld by taking the nonstop direct flight from Brownsville to Orlando Brownsville via Avelo Airlines.
Also users looking to visit Universal Studios, Venice Beach, stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame or tour the Santa Monica Pier will now be able to fly direct to Los Angeles via the same airline. These routes to Los Angeles and Orlando will operate twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Avelo Airlines operates a fleet of new generation Boeing 737 aircraft and flies to 44 popular destinations in the United States, including its five bases at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), Orlando International Airport (MCO), Delaware Valley’s Wilmington Airport (ILG) and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
