LAS CRUCES, NM – The Las Cruces City Council has approved an investment of $897,596 for the installation of a new film production company to boost the film industry in the region.
The approved investment is with resources from the Local Economic Development Act (LEDA), through the Legislative Capital Outlay Funds, for the development of 828 Productions, LLC. The City Council reported that an additional $3 million in state LEDA funds will be provided, and the City will act as the fiscal agent for the project.
828 Productions, LLC, was established in 2019 and has selected Las Cruces as its location for its film studio. In exchange for LEDA funding, the company will employ 100 full-time workers by December 31, 2029.
In addition, the company will commit to a capital investment of approximately $75 million. In its first phase of development, 828 Productions plans to build four sound stages, offices, a factory and other facilities. The 100 jobs will offer an average salary of $75,150.
MovieMaker magazine released that at least three New Mexico cities appeared on its annual list of “Best Places to Live and Work as a Filmmaker” in 2023, including Las Cruces, which has been named to the ranking for the first time.
For the fifth consecutive year, Albuquerque was among the Large Cities category. As for Small Cities and Towns, Santa Fe appeared again on the list, taking the number one spot for the first time, and Las Cruces joined the list in the number seven spot.
Recently the New Mexico Media Academy (NMMA) announced a collaboration with the Department of Higher Education and 15 of its statewide film and media programs, Netflix, NBCUniversal, 828 Productions, and IATSE Local 480 to boost New Mexico’s film industry and ecosystem.
