LAS CRUCES, NM – The City of Las Cruces announced that all public health orders related to Covid-19 have been extended through May 16, 2022, according to a mandate issued April 15 by the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH).
“We know that being up-to-date with vaccines is the best way to protect ourselves, our families and communities, and to reduce the risk of medically significant illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19,” said David R. Scrase, Acting Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Health.
According to DOH data, Covid-19 cases have declined since March and hospitalizations remain low. Data from the past two weeks, however, show that the new variant Omicron BA.2 accounts for 22.1% of cases in New Mexico and continues to spread across the state.
As the vast majority of Covid-19-related hospitalizations and deaths occur among the small group of unvaccinated citizens, the DOH urged everyone over the age of 5 to keep up with their vaccinations and boosters.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages the public to follow the health recommendations in effect in their county to help prevent chain infections.
During the pandemic, the state of New Mexico has accumulated a total of 520,288 positive cases of coronavirus, with 7,416 deaths. Meanwhile, Doña Ana County has so far recorded 62,987 infections and 745 deaths due to the disease.
