LAS CRUCES, NM – The City of Las Cruces and Mesilla Valley Community of Hope broke ground on a new public-private housing development called Amador Crossing.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Representative Micaela Lara Cadena, Mayor Eric Enriquez and Mayor Pro Tempore Johana Bencomo.
This new development combines affordable housing with essential on-site supportive services, creating a comprehensive solution for individuals and families in need and addressing housing instability in Las Cruces.
Amador Crossing will be a two-story building located at 1101 W. Amador Avenue in Las Cruces, which will have 50 units, comprised of 25 studio units and 25 one-bedroom units. Four units (two of each type) meet ADA accessibility standards.
Construction began this month and is expected to be completed within a 15-month schedule. While occupancy could occur as early as April 2026.
Amador Crossing aims to provide stable housing combined with comprehensive on-site supportive services managed by Mesilla Valley Community of Hope. Services include case management, access to mental health care, substance abuse treatment, job training, medical care and more.
According to the Las Cruces City Council, 2024, made the need for affordable housing urgent, with more than 2,400 households on the Mesilla Valley Public Housing Authority’s waiting list and 585 on Mesilla Valley Community of Hope’s list.
The new building will cost $15,648,271, including taxes, contingencies and project management fees. The city has secured $11,415,250, including a $4 million commitment from the city’s Telshor Fund, as well as $5,975,000 in state capital investment allocations and $1.5 million from Housing New Mexico.
The city has also prioritized this for 2025 legislative funding applications and submitted a grant application to Governors Homeless Initiatives, Housing NM and Dona Ana County.
The building was designed by Desert Peak Architects, and construction management will be overseen by Spartan Construction of New Mexico.
