In order to capitalize on the growing international demand for healthcare and boost the local economy, the city has formally created the Piedras Negras Medical Tourism Cluster. The initiative was launched with the signing of a Founding Charter by a coalition of municipal authorities, healthcare providers, and business leaders.
The newly appointed board of the cluster includes Guillermo Álvarez Valdés as President, Alejo Francisco Villarreal as Vice President, Bernardo Márquez as Commissioner, and Nydia Magaly Felipe as Legal Representative. The founding event also gathered doctors, city council members, and representatives from the local health sector.
The cluster’s primary goal is to stimulate economic activity by organizing and promoting the city’s medical services for international patients. This sector is known for its broad ripple effect, benefiting not only hospitals but also supporting local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. Officials stressed that the cluster is a non-partisan entity focused solely on Piedras Negras’s economic development.
Highlighting the national potential, Mayor Jacobo Rodríguez stated that medical tourism generates over $8 billion annually in Mexico, with approximately $500 million concentrated in the border region. “Piedras Negras has significant room to expand its participation in this lucrative market,” Rodríguez affirmed.
The formal establishment of the cluster initiates a coordinated strategy to link the local medical sector with international demand, positioning Piedras Negras as a competitive destination for health services. This collaborative effort among specialists, authorities, and business leaders aims to solidify the municipality’s role in this promising industry.
